What’s the Best Temperature for My Water Heater?

All Detroit homeowners should consider adjusting the setting on their hot water heater. Many people have asked us, what temperature should my water heater be set at?

Most hot water heater manufactures preset the temperature of their hot water heaters to 140 degrees. If your heater has never been adjusted, it is likely set at the manufacture temperature. However, The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends it be set to 120 degrees. There is no right answer for water heater temperature settings. Different people will have different needs and different budgets.  If you are concerned about being scalded, energy savings and reducing your monthly bill, it is safe to leave your water heater at 120 degrees. However, you want to keep it high enough to prevent illness, most specifically legionellosis (Legionnaires’ disease) or have older pipes, 140 may be a safer option.
