Water Heater Temperature: What is The Proper One?

Many do not know what temperature to keep their water heaters at. Most water heaters are sold pre-set at 140 degrees. It is recommended to set it at 120 however to avoid scalding and to save energy. Winter is here, which might mean it it will take a moment for your water to heat up before you can take a shower.  The weather outside can affect how hot or cold your water is. When the water entering your water heater is frigid, it causes your unit to overwork itself. In older units, the proper temperature is hard to reach because the incoming cold water affects the water already heated.

Often, adjusting the water heater is a good idea but could cause an increase in your bill or possible scalding.

Here are some other ways to keep your water warm.

  • Seal any drafts or increase the temperature inside the home
  • Insulate the pipes inside and outside of the home
  • Have an inspection seasonally
  • Buy a water heater insulator
